They had left their homes far across the sea
In search of a better life to follow a dream
And by the sweat of their brow and the graces that be
They worked the land 'til it was ready for their precious seed
And when the rains came for days on end
The crops stood still and the people wept
And when the river was about to wash their fields away
The rain let up and the children sang

Chorus
Hey look up ahead, there's hole in the clouds
There's a break in the weather now the sun's comin' out
It's like a ray of hope shining down
Hey look up ahead, there's a hole in the clouds

Well, this old world of ours has come such a long way
In so little time it seems so much has changed
Our ancestors sailed the ocean blue
Now we've taken on wings and we fly to the moon
But still we struggle back down on earth
As I walk down my street, I see a man who's been hurt
From the bottle and the hunger and the bed that he's made
Thank God for the dreamer and the children that sing
Hey look up ahead, there's a hole in the clouds

Well it was late last night I dreamt I was flyin'
I was a child again lost and cryin'
Because the earth below was covered in darkness
From greed and hatred in a world gone heartless
So I spread my wings and flew high on above it
Saw the light of morning and heard the angels singin'

Chorus

Calling Your Name
© 1997 Johnsmith, Blue Pine Music (ASCAP)

I feel like I'm hangin' on by my fingertips
Afraid to look down but somehow I just can't resist
About to fall into a well
Down to the bottom and lose myself
But I'm trying this time to swallow my pride
And admit that I might need some help

Chorus
That's why I'm calling
That's why I'm calling your name
Just a smile, just a touch, just a little of your love
Is enough to make my day
Oh that's why I'm calling your name

I've always been the kind to do things myself
I'm foolishly set in my ways and stubborn as hell
But what's the point, why struggle alone
Us people need people, it's deep in our bones
So I'll take your hand if the offer still stands
I don't need to be all on my own

Chorus
What can I say? what can I do?
You've always been there, you've always come through
So when you're in need, please think of me
Call my name and I'll be there for you

Chorus

From His Window
© 1997 Johnsmith, Blue Pine Music (ASCAP)

He stands beside the window, he watches cars go by
He waves at everybody, he's just a friendly guy
He doesn't know what day it is, he doesn't talk much anymore
Sometimes he cries when he means to laugh
The doctors say he can't help that

I come to visit and take him out on drives
He wants to go home with me every time
But the nurses come to take him
Back to his room that's waiting
I fight to keep my tears inside
From his window, he waves good-bye

Where has the time all gone to, it seems like only yesterday
We used to dance upon his shoes, back on Sunday afternoons
He was a mountain standing tall, doing his best to raise us all
We always had enough to eat, he worked two jobs to make ends meet

But now it seems, he can't remember that
And it's hard for the rest of us to understand
But when I come to visit, he knows my name and says it
And I fight to keep my tears inside
From his window, he waves good-bye

But when I come to visit, he knows my name and he says it
It makes me glad I made the drive
From his window, he waves good-bye
From his window, he waves good-bye

Once Upon This Life
© 1997 Johnsmith, Blue Pine Music (ASCAP)

All I ever wanted, as a song upon my lips
And an old rockin' chair, on a porch facin' west
And one good path for walkin', down along the river's edge
Tell me who needs anymore than this

Chorus
But there once was a time, when I was maybe not so wise
And I ran off to the country, desperately to find
The better job, the better life,
The greener grass on the other side
Oh once upon this life

After all my runnin', I came to settle down,
With a good-hearted woman, in a little river town
And we bought a fixer-upper with a million-dollar view
Now greener grass is just an attitude

Chorus

Oh, once upon this life, There was a boy with clear blue eyes
And he could see, beyond the pines
Into his world that knew no time
And life was good, and simple then
Thank God the boy remembered this

Chorus

All I ever wanted was a song upon my lips
The peace of mind, and strength of heart to somehow always sing it
And one good friend to walk with down along the river's edge
Tell me who needs anymore than this
Tell me who needs more than this, oh once upon this life

Feels Like Rain
© 1997 Johnsmith, Blue Pine Music (ASCAP)

It feels like rain is about to fall
It's overdue, so if it does I say that's fine, just let it come
Let it pour, really hard
Let my neighbors think I'm crazy when I dance in my backyard
Because I'm not afraid of a little rain
I feel a change is coming on
It feels like someone's pulling on my arm, beggin' me to run
Far away, to someplace new Just take a chance, you're overdue
Follow that voice that's telling you
Not to be afraid of a little change
I am not afraid of my used to be
It's behind me now and it can't hurt me
And what lies ahead, I will do my best
So I can say I've lived this life
With no regrets
I feel a peace over me
Like a blanket that a mother lies upon her child asleep
It feel like love, sweet love
And I wonder if the world could only feel like this just once
Would we all be afraid of a little love, of a little peace?
Feels like rain, sweet rain

Box Canyon
© 1997 Johnsmith, Blue Pine Music / Lisa Aschman, Nashville Geographic (ASCAP)

Cool wind, blowin' over these grasslands
Hoofbeats, pounding, and his hearbeat's in rhythm
As he races, they chase him
Now they've got him right where they want him

Chorus
And he's trapped in a box canyon
And he never saw it coming
Now he is wondering, wondering what if
He is never free to run again

Now he's living, fenced in, his freedom's been taken from him
It's not the life he would have chosen
Everyday he feels more broken
And as he looks off into the distance
There's a fire that still burns within him

Chorus

A man is like a pony when he's scared and when he's lonely
He can make an awful mistake with his life
And find a ring upon his finger
But unable to remember, was it love, once upon a time

Sitting on his front porch as the day turns into dusk
The night is looking lonesome, the way it sometimes does
And in a moment of compassion, he walks down to the gate
Lifts the latch, waves his hat, today's your lucky day

You were trapped in a box canyon
You never saw it comin'
Now you are running
Running with the wind
Thankful to be free again

This Night
© 1997 Johnsmith, Blue Pine Music / Lisa Aschman, Nashville Geographic (ASCAP)

The music, the candles,
The softness of your smile,
The shadows, dancing
Along with lovers laughing
Everything about this night
Is so here, so now, so right

Your fingers caress me
Reaching out to tell me
Something tender
I feel my heart surrender
Everything about this night
Is so here, so now, so right

Say it's written in the stars
The chance we met at all
But it doesn't matter now
Doesn't matter how ... or why

The moonlight, the kisses
Eyes like open windows
This is perfect, so in love
That's just what this is
Everything about this night
Is so here, so now, so right

Dad, Don't Worry
© 1991 Johnsmith, Blue Pine Music (ASCAP)

It's not easy, sitting here watching
Watching you making ready to leave
'Cuz you've been under out wings from the beginning
Now you're taking to the wind
What you gonna do when the rain starts to falling
What you gonna do when the thunder rolls in
Where you gonna turn to when the water starts to rising
And it's suddenly over your head and you said

Chorus
Dad, don't worry so much
I'll find a boat and I'll ride this storm out
I learned to walk and then I learned how to run
Help me on my way now, don't worry so much

I helped you carry your bags through the doorway
I watched you turn and take one last look
And then I remembered myself when I was eighteen
And all the courage it took

I was going off to school in California
I couldn't get any further away
I still remember my folks by the curbside
And all the tears in their eyes
And I thought

Chorus

So we said our goodbyes from the steps on the front porch
We both stood teary-eyed as you turned away
Then I sat and I watched you all the way down to the corner
Where you turned with a smile that seemed to say

Chorus

Growin' Up So Fast
© 1997 Johnsmith, Blue Pine Music (ASCAP)

Chorus
Hey, what you are doing, standing there taller than tall?
Looking so sure, looking so ready for it all
Hey, where are you going, growin' up so fast?

Graduation day, on the new gym floor
The hometown proud in their caps and gowns all in a row
They call your name; you march up the aisle
You take your time, you move with grace, you walk in style
And in your ponytail and your new earring
Man, you're a picture of how the times have changed

Chorus

Now's there a road that lies before you
Stretching out across tomorrow
It goes anywhere you want
There is no right there is no wrong
So just go follow your heart

Now me and your mother, your little sister and brother
We're all so grateful you've been such good big brother
And I hope someday, you stand in these shoes
And you have a kid of your own makes you feel the way I do
And you'll see time flies and before you know
He's all grown up and walking out the door
And you're saying

Chorus

Find Hope
© 1993 Johnsmith, Blue Pine Music (ASCAP)

This song is dedicated to the loving memory of my dear friend Forrest Day ... May 7, 1978 - May 17, 1997

When I was a kid, I flew a kite
I loved the feel of the wind through the line
But then I slipped and I lost my grip
I chased in vain 'til it cleared the ridge
Then I sat and cried, just asking why
Anything has to happen like this anytime
Was I to blame or was it simply fate
It was nearly dusk when the answer came

Chorus
That the sun will set and the moon will rise
As sure as night comes, the wind will die
And if not me, then someone else
Will find that kite and fly it so high themselves
When we lose what we treasure most
In the loss, find hope

When I was fourteen, I held the hand
Of a girl who held my heart and then
Just when I learned what love could do
Her father transferred and she had to move
So I held her close on the night before
We took an oath upon our love we swore
That we would wait, but deep down inside
I think we both had realized

Chorus

Someday I know, that my time will come
And this life I hold so dear, will all be done and gone
Yet still I feel there has got to be more
And that death is just a step through another door

Chorus

No Turning Back
© 1993 Johnsmith, Blue Pine Music (ASCAP)

Got all I own in my left front pocket
Heading out of this one horse town
Try as I may to find one good reason
I've driven every street and I still can't find one
And so I'm going to run like the dickens
To the edge of town and past these city limits

Chorus
And there'll be no turning back
Nowhere to go but straight ahead
My mind is made up; it's a matter of fact
There's going to be no turning back

I got a call last night from my big brother Jimmy
He said that he wished me well and not to worry
Driving away, I can almost see him
Three years ago, on the night he was leaving
So here I am, in the same situation
My turn has come and I'm going to take it

Chorus

Looking through my rearview mirror
I see my world so much clearer
My little town is getting smaller by the minute
I see my eye has a teardrop in it

I want to live my life like I meant it
I don't want to follow in nobody's footsteps
'Cuz if I stick around here, I'll surely regret it
I've seen it before, and I know how it happens
So when I'm lying in my pinewood casket
I hope I'm smiling and angels are singing

Silence the Thunder
© 1997 Johnsmith, Blue Pine Music (ASCAP)

The telephone rings, the light turns green
You're off to the races again, you're living in the fast lane
You go where you must, but you can't get away
The noise is within, there is only one way

Chorus
Silence the thunder, quiet the rain
Turn down these voices so loud in my head I can't hear myself think
Just welcome the moment, in all of its wonder
Help me be still give me the will
To silence the thunder

I think about the weather and is it gonna change my plans
When will I learn that it is what it is, it's just out of my hands
Then I think about my job, will I ever make enough?
Enough to get ahead, but no one seems to know
Just ahead of what

Chorus
I am not alone not some island far from shore
There's a voice so soft and low, far beneath the thunder of the storm
So go where you must, but you can't get away the noise is within, there is only one way

Chorus
