Johnsmith 2018 Spring Newsletter

Johnsmith 2018 Spring Newsletter

Hello folks, happy springtime. It seems like a long time since I’ve been in touch. I’m sitting here along the banks of the Mississippi, pickin’ on my guitar, watching a ground hog gather grassy nesting materials, and listening to the red-winged blackbirds stake out their claims. Spring is slowly springing here in the Northland.

2018 has been a busy year so far. I had a fantastic month teaching songwriting at the Esalen Institute near Big Sur. Always an incredible experience witnessing students who have never written a song or sung in public get up there and hit it out of the park for our finale concert.

I had a blast in Feb at the International Folk Alliance in Kansas City, nearly 3000 folkies in one hotel. Not sure how much work I’ll eventually book from it, but it’s heart-warming to connect with fellow musicians, vendors, and radio people. I’ve gotta say I heard some serious good music from loads of young folks from the US and abroad. The future of folk music looks bright.

Jo and I had a wonderful week in OR in March playing shows in Portland, Bend, Sisters, and Eugene. I never tire of Oregon’s diverse stunning scenery and open-minded people.

I also had a great couple of weeks in North Carolina. Loved it, played in a cabin in the hills near Bakersville, had a wonderful show in Deep Gap, NC - home of Doc Watson, a very sweet house concert in Ashville, shows near the coast in Wilmington, New Bern, and Morehead City. Good folks border to border.

And for two weeks my wife, Jo, and I camped in our little VW Euro camper bus in Gulf Islands National Seashore near Pensacola Beach, FL. Glorious white beaches, live oak/pine woods campground, migrating birds, bike trail, and nightly campfires. R & R doesn’t get much better.

Some good news is that my new CD ‘Ginkgo” has done very well with Folk Radio and made it to the top 10 and is still getting steady airplay. If you haven’t gotten it yet, check it out at my website: http://www.johnsmithmusic.com/cdslisten/

~ We know Johnsmith and his music here on the West coast of Ireland .. we love how he draws us in with his stories as great songwriters always do. Troubadours have always been part of the Irish landscape and John Smith brings us up to date with what we love. ~

What’s ahead?

This weekend I have two fun shows. Fri April 13at 8:30pm in the Grand Ballroom in La Crosse, WI as part of the Midwest Music Fest. AND Saturday night, April 14, I’ll be playing at one of the coolest venues anywhere, the Café Carpe in Fort Atkinson WI. ‘To die for’ homemade food, the best of WI beers on tap, and one of the most intimate rooms I’ve ever played. 8:30pm.

On May 5th I’ll be joined by my music comrades, Dan Sebranek, Larry Dalton, and Radoslav Lorkovic at Leo and Leona’s, Newburg Corners 12 miles east of La Crosse WI on Hwy 33. 7:30pm. Spread the word. This will be a rockin’ show and no better way to bring in the new season.

I’ll also be joined by Dan and Larry on Fri May 25th at the Kerrville Folk Festival in the Texas hill country. This festival is my folk mecca.

Lastly, I’ll be playing in my hometown of DeWitt, Iowa at the Opera Theater with Dan, Larry, and Rad on Fri July 6th. I’m so excited to be back playing in the theater where I went to see movies as a kid. My sibs, cousins, schoolmates, former teachers, and neighbors will all be there. Lots of stories and plenty of laughs.

More shows with info listed below.

Once again I’ll be leading four group tours to Ireland this summer. All the 2018 tours are full again. I do hope you all get the chance to join me one day over there. It’s hard to put in words how moving the tours are. There is nothing quite like our tour in Ireland.

If you have considered hosting a house concert sometime, let me know and I’ll fill you in on the options of how to make that work. I love playing house concerts. Nothing better than up close and personal.

Enjoy your spring and summer everyone. I wish I was going to be playing in a place near all of you. Hopefully in time I’ll get there.

Hopefully you’ve gotten the chance to hear my new CD, Ginkgo.

Get out there and listen to the sounds of the river.

 Thanks folks,

John
